Changing Up the Speed Workouts

I did a video about my workout today – below:

I fear that I’m not getting any faster by sprinting up the steps as I’ve been doing with my latest speed workouts on the mountain staircase. I weigh 12 pounds less than I do when I went up in 12:01, about 3 years ago. Recently I tried and did 12:26. What is going on? I started training for speed since Jan 10 this year I think it was. By now I should have made huge gains on my time. Instead, I’m stuck at 11:23 I think it is. I did that one about 2 months ago.

For the first 500 or more times, I carried a backpack with my 2 notebook computers, Nikon Camera and lenses, and other stuff I was afraid to have stolen out of my home in Thailand. Theft of foreigners happens OFTEN.

So I was carrying 12-15 pounds of stuff, along with my 12 lbs of fat that I recently lost.

I think that might be the key – training with more weight at a fast pace, and not sprinting – not going anaerobic.

Sprinting brings anaerobic to the forefront and that is not how the stair climbing races are – they are on the verge of it, but are pretty much aerobic. I need to train both systems, but, the aerobic system more I think. That, and building strength for flying up the stairs by 2 at a time. Not even to mention my arms, which I don’t hardly use.

I’m going to try adding weight to my backpack now for the next 20 times or so and then make another attempt at a record up the mountain. My real goal is 10:00 minutes. If I can hit that – I’ll be happy for a while. At least for this year. Yes that means giant gains, but, since I haven’t trained for speed prior to this – and since I have been training for speed, I think I’ve just been focused too much on the anaerobic part – I think it’s doable.

Let’s see how it goes…
